Russ Bauer is one of Australia's leading authorities on memory techniques. The first Australian Memory Champion in 2002, Russ went on to become Australia's first full-time school memory teacher. WHY DO WE NEED TO TRAIN OUR BRAINS?
Since the earliest days of ancient Greece and Rome, the most respected leaders were those who could recall facts and figures, and could deliver epic speeches without the need for notes. Today, the digital age and Artificial Intelligence are making us lazy thinkers and creators. Now, more than any other time in history, it is vital that we learn techniques for a) encoding information more quickly, b) storing it more accurately, and c) retrieving it more readily, especially while under the pressure of time constraints.
TRY THIS MEMORY CHALLENGE
The average adult brain can handle around seven or eight pieces of information in its short-term memory. Could you double that and learn the order of fifteen random items? Try learning the words shown below. Give yourself a few minutes, and write them out afterwards or say them back to a friend to check your accuracy. Then watch this instructional video and test yourself a second time. Did you notice a huge improvement? If you can learn to "think like a five-year-old" again and use your imagination to create a vivid story, your brain will have a MUCH greater chance of encoding the information, storing it accurately, and recalling it with much greater ease.

Way back in 1997, Russ set the Australian record (still held) for the "Most Hours Playing a Piano Without Stopping", which he did to raise money for his local high school band. He finally stopped at 37 hours, after playing more than 800 songs from memory.
In 2014, Russ and son Toby had a viral video involving Russ playing a trombone while Toby slammed an oven door in time. The "When Mama Isn't Home" phenomenon became a favourite all over the world and spawned hundreds of copycat videos.
In 2024 - 2025 Russ completed a personal challenge to learn the folk song "Greensleeves" on 50 different instruments - flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, marimba, piano, kalimba, bagpipes - just to name a few!
From 2025 - 2026 Russ has been uploading covers of former number one songs - a different piano-vocal song every day for a year!
